STAR FOOTBALL CLUB
ANNUAL BALL
The Star Football Club held their Annual Ball in the Town Hall last night, over a hundred couples attending, and voting the function a decided success.
The hall was beautifully decorated in appropriate colours, the main scheme being in amber and black, the Club’s colours. Intertwined in long streamers from the centre of the hall were Southland and West Coast ribbons, maroon and red and white respectively. A horseshoe of soft multicoloured electric lights, ran round the dress circle, while the stage was done in amber and black trellis-work with goal-posts and lootball complete in the centre. The Club’s numerous trophies were prominently, displayed. Steele’s Orchestra and an excellent floor left nothing to be desired, while the supper served was excellent. , During the evening, the Mayor, Mr J. AV. Greenslade, took the opportunity of extending on behalf of Greymouth citizens a welcome to the Southland Rugby football team. He said that they were doubly welcome because of the fact that many of the Coast’s pioneers were now residing in the South. He hoped the men would have as good a time as did the farmers from their province, who had visited us a few weeks ago. He wished them the best of weather, a good clean game and hoped that the best team would win. Mr Rice, the team’s captain and manager, belonged to an old West Coast family, and all were pleased to see him. Mr N. W. Jones welcomed the team on behalf of the W r est Coast Rugby Union and the Star Club. He apologised for the absence of Mr A. A. Adams, President of the Union, and wished the team a happy sojourn on the Coast, kind weather, and a good game.
Mr Rico replied, thanking previous speakers for their kind remarks, and the Star Club for the invitation to their dance, which they were enjoying very much. They had been given a great welcome to the Coast, which upheld the district’s fine reputation for hospitality. Lie promised the game would be a good one, and expressed tho hope that the Coast would make a return visit to Southland, where they would get the best of welcomes. Mr Greenslade then called for cheers for tho Southland boys, which were reciprocated in the heartiest manner. Among those present were: —
