The Government has published Japan’s reply to the Nanking Government’s note abrogating the Sino-Ju-panese commercial treaty. It refuses to accept, the Nanking Government’s viewpoint. It urges China to withdraw the abrogation. The note concludes (strongly): “If Nanking persists in the enforcement of its proposed provisional regulations, Japan may be obliged to take such measures as may bo deemed suitable to safeguard rights and interests assured by treaties.”
REDS’ TERRIBLE OUTRAGE. SHANGHAI, August. 9. Reverend Chderr, from Hengchow, Hunan, reports a ghastly story of a. Red uprising in Hunan, carried out at the orders of Moscow. Failing to gain control of the southeastern counties, the Red forces laid waste to eleven counties and razed many cities and villages, killing over one hundred thousand. Leiyang, a city of thirty thousand, was completely destroyed by fire, not one house remaining.
