CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

(To the Editor.) t Sir, —I notice at the last meeting of the Chamber of Commerce it was suggested that the business people should assist in getting the public weighbridge put in order. This in my opinion would bo an absolute waste of money, as it can only be used for weighing loaded, drays or any conveyance up to ten feet in length. A one or two-ton truck cannot be weighed on it, and 90 per cent, of the ones requiring it have these. When in working order it was scarcely used. For that reason I would support the business peoplp be asked to assist in removing this eyesore from the main street, and i£ necessary procure an up-to-date machine that will be capable of weighing every class.of vehicle and instal it in the municipal yards. Quite a lot was heard of the Stewart scheme and its possibilities at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, and some members would be in favour of testing it while the bar is in fairly good order with about 20 feet of water. This is not good business, i and would those members be. satisfied if they had to pay for it out of their own pockets. I consider the chairman's attitude is the correct one, who is no doubt leaving it to the Engineer to decide and not. Io tamper with it until it is shoaled up and then the plant will be pul. to the tost for which il is intended. There is too much money involved and before the scheme is proved, it must be tried out'under the worst conditions, that is when the bar is shoaled up and unworkable. I am etc, BUSINESS MAN.
