BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.)

The members of the local Silver Band, who participated in the recent Granity Band contests, did not repeat their Westport successes, Mr. T. Kerr’s second in the euphonium solo being 'the nearest approach to securing a winning ticket. Judging from recent Press reports, the instrumentalists of the Grey Municipal Band literally monopolised the various solo items, securing no fewer than eight first and five second prizes.

The local school boys’ soccer team, organised at the beginning of the present season, are making quite a name for themselves in ’ the Greymouth (school boys) junior section. Up-to-date, eight successive wins in “friendly” and competition encounters have come their way. The meeting of these juveniles and the fast improving Marist boys, at Blackball a month hence, should attract a goodly attendance of spectators to the Domain, when the exchequer of the Blackball School Boys’ Club should be greatly augmented.

Soccerites of this locality are pleased to know that at least two members of the Blackball Club have caught the eye of the Selection Committee for the forthcoming Westland-Buller “Rep” game on . Saturday, July 21. Rarity, the Blackball captain is included in the team at inside left while Caldwell is selected as emergency back. On present form the youthful Caldwell should advance a stage higher before the present season closes and command a permanent place in future Rep. teams. Mrs. D. Tennent having returned to Blackball has secured a building site in one of the most centrally situated positions of the town and contemplates going into business in the near future, when present building operations are completed.

The Blackball mine despite rumours to the contrary has continued to work all this week. However, owing to the recent unworkable conditions of the Grey bar it is stated that a large order for coal destined for the Blackball mine was unavoidably cancelled. It never rains but what it pours! is the general comment. A special general meeting of the Blackball-Roa Medical Association Association will be held on Sunday, July 15, in the Miners’ Hall Blackball. Members are requested to attend and register their votes as to who shall be the new medical officer in place of Dr. Ray, who is leaving shortly for Grevmouth.
