AMERICAN CHARGES.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Tn reference to Mr Heughan’s statement in last night’s “Star” re price of admission to pictures in America. Whilst not denying that Mr Heughan paid ten dollars (£2) to sec “Ben Hur,” I will say, that, that price was probably paid at one of the highclass theatres on Broadway, New York, where these theatres have an orchestra of thirty to forty instruments, which alone are worth the money to hear, besides all other modern comforts which are installed for the convenience of patrons. Mr Heughan also states that the lowest price usually charged is one dollar (4/2). I wish to state that this is not so. At some of the first run theatres, admission is charged at the rate of fifty cents (2/1) and upwards, whilst at second run theatres Ihe price ranges, usually, from ten cents (sd) up to seventy-five cents (3/-). It also seems to be a common error that the cost of living in America is very high. Undoubtedly, that is so, if one would wish to soar that high. But a good square meal such as anyone is likely to get in any town in New Zealand, can be obtained for fifty cents (2/1), and living rooms from five dollars (£1) a. month upwards. Trusting this will obviate these errors, I am, yours etc., — BROADWAY. Greymouth, June 26.
