BOGUS ACTOR’S RUSE
LANDLADIES SWINDLED. LONDON, May 12. Posing as an actor, a man for whom the police are searching has cruelly victimised a number of North'London landladies. Three widows living in Bowes Park have been swindled by the same trick. The man obtained board and lodging, for which he offered generous terms “in consideration of his being kept late at the theatre.” Next morning lie told a story of distress occasioned
by his wife’s illness and his temporary shortage of cash. Opening a letter which had come for him that morning, on the notepaper of a London theatre, he produced a cheque for £l5, his “salary and expenses for the week.” He expressed annoyance that the cheque was dated for the following day, and induced the landlady to take it as security for a loan of £3. He left for the theatre, and was not seen again. The cheque was worthless. In one case, it is said, the bogus actor stole the landlady’s purse, containing £5 —all that she had.
