WOMAN ASSAULTED
MONEY AND GOODS STOLEN.
SYDNEY, June 2
A daring robbery was perpetrated at Newtown by a man and a woman last night. The audacity of the thieves was remarkable. They chose a shop in the main thoroughfare, King Street, for their work.
According to a report made to the police, Mrs. Halliday, who keeps a ham and beef shop at 82 King Street, was standing behind the counter about 7.30 p.m., when a man entered, and asked to be served with a pound of cheese. While Mrs. Halliday was serving him a woman entered after being beckoned by the man. Mrs. Halliday became alarmed when the woman locked the shop door after entering, but before she could call out the man struck her a violent blow on the face. She fell to the floor in a semi-conscious condition. The woman, who had entered the shop, then opened the till, and extracted some money. The man and woman then carried Mrs. Halliday to a room at the back of the shop. The man took a ring from her fingqr and threatened Mrs. Halliday that he Would shoot her if she attempted to follow them. The man and woman left the shop carrying away with them a fur coat and a hat.
After they had been gone some minutes Mrs. Halliday examined the till. She found that the sum of £3 had been stolen. She estimated her loss, including the coat and hat, at over £2O.
The Newtown police are investigating the matter. Mrs. Halliday was able to give only a vague description of her assailants.
