HEENEY’S MASCOT
MAORIS’ GIFT CLOAK. (Per Press Association.) GISBORNE, May 31. On behalf of the Maoris of New Zealand, a handsome Karowai, or Maori cloak, has been forwarded to America to Tom Heeney by Lady Carroll. -The cloak, which is made of flax fibre, handsomely decorated with the feathers of native birds, was formerly the property of Ruahuia Tawhiwhi, one of the leading Chieftains of the Ngatiporou tribe, of the East Coast, who died recently. Accompanying the gift is a letter, in Maori and English, wishing Heeney all success, and stating that it would give the donors pleasure if Heeney wore the cloak on his entry in t.he ring against Tunney. Cable advice from Mr Kilmartin. who went to Australia to negotiate on behalf of the Otago Boxing Association with Stadiums Ltd., for opponent's for Johnnie Leckie, stated that Tommy Barber had been secured. He sails for New Zealand within a fortnight. AMATEUR TOURNEY. The entries for the amateur boxing tournament to be held at the Town Hall on Saturday, June fl, close with the secretary, Mr F. W. Baillie, tomorrow, Saturday. The tournament will act as a guide to likely candidates for the West Coast ‘team for the New Zealand boxing championships to be held at Auckland. As the West Coast championships are to be held next month, there should be some keen displays at Saturday week’s tournament. i
