SOCCER FOOTBALL

WESTLAND V. WELLINGTON

Keen interest is being taken in West Coast Soccer circles as to the outcome of the representative game, Westland v. Wellington, to be played at Wellington on Monday next. It is recognised that the Coasters will be up against a strong side, but there are numerous supporters to say that the visitors will triumph. The team includes about half a dozen of the men who defeated the Canadians last year, one of them being Timlin, whose fine goalkeeping against the tourists gained him an ovation. The team will leave for Wellington on Saturday, and will be in charge of Mr E. Airey, as manager. The players are all reported fit, and the team will be as follows: —

W. Timlin,' goalkeeper. F. Moor, left back; W. King, right back.

J. Cowie, left half; D. Barnes, centre half; R. Marshall, right half. -E. McNeil, centre forward; A. Winstanley, outside left; H. Pickering, inside left; W. Wilson, inside right; S. I-Icwison (captain), outside right. Emergency: J. Rarity. Discussing the prospects with a reporter to-day, Mr Airey expressed the opinion that the play would be of a very fast nature, owing to the “bowling green” quality of the turf on the Wellington ground. This might trouble the Coasters at first, as they have been used to playing on uneven grounds. He was not prepared to predict the final score, but was confident that the Coasters would give a good account of themselves. WESTLAND v. BULLER. The challenge of the Westland Soccer Association for the Peter Dawson Cup has been accepted by Buller. The match will take place at Westpoit, and the Buller Association has suggested Aungust. 18 as the date. An endeavour is being made by Westland, however, to have the game played at an earlier date. SCHOOL SOCCER. GREY MAIN 1; COBDEN 0. An exhilarating game of football was staged by these two teams at the Rec. yesterday, the issue being in doubt until the end of the game. Cobden kicked off, but Main were more aggressive and but for the fine defensive work of H. Lindbom would have kept Barbara busy clearing. Both Minchin and Wallwork, Main’s Halves, kept their insides and centre well supplied with the leather, but. these had not enough cohesion to make their efforts bear fruit. McHugh, outside left, had a worthy opponent in F. Lindbom, and these two had some rare tussles for control of the ball. First one and then the other took the ball the length of the line only to be robbed by the backs Ashby on Main’s right wing played well for a novice, but Allen, his adversary, more than held his own at times. Eatwell was a warrior for his size and was always there when business was doing. Main were sorely pressed on several occasions, but Cobden just failed to drive home the attacks. Clarke, in goal, brought off several smart saves from shots sent in by Lindbom.

Play was very kaleidoscopic first one attacking and then another, both sides being awarded corners. McHugh’s kicking was not on a par with that of Lindbom and this forced Main to guard their goal most zealously. The fulls on both sides, H. Lindbom and Gilmore, Cobden, and Marsh and Kibble, Main, played fine defensive football, and at half time honours were even. On changing over, Cobden forced the pace and their forward line combined much better. Up and down play followed, practically every player getting a share of the ball. After fully fifteen minutes’ exciting play F. Lindbom, beating two of Main’s players with the ball at toe raced along the line, and centring nicely, allowed C. Lindbom; to shoot, but the shot missed by inches. Not to be outdone they returned to the attack, but Clarke brought off a timely save and turned defence into attack. Goodall kicked, and following up fast, beat his opponent for the ball, allowing De Freatiis to carry on, and using the line to advantage, he centred nicely for Jarden to send in a hot shot, with but two minutes to go, and Main a goal ahead. Cobden hustled along and transferred play to Main’s goal, but Marsh and Kibble were able to clear, and Ashby centring the ball, time was called in midfield. Both sides played wall, but Lindbom (3), and Eatwell for Cobden, and Wallwork, Marsh, Minchin, Goodall, De Freatus and McHugh, were the pick of the players. Rev. W. Bell was an impartial referee. BLACKBALL SOCCER CLUB A general meeting was called last week end to place the financial position of the Club before the members. It was uecided to carry on in view of brighter prospects in the near future. Several Senior and Junior players promised to assist the Club in every way, which was greatly appreciated by the management committee. Owing to slack times etc., in this locality, home games have been poorly patronised. To carry on any organisation we must have finance and the Blackball Club are no exception. All partisans with the interests of the Soccer code at heart, should assist the Club in every way to overcome the present difficulty. The following teams will represent Blackball in the various grades this week-end. Junior team v. Millerton ‘All Blacks’ on Saturday June 2. Kick-off 2.45—R. Hutchison, W. Boyle, A. Lamberton, Jas. McDade, W. McArthur, “Jock” Anderson, Jno. Anderson, J. Clark, A. McGorgan, J. Swinley, W. McVicar. Emergencies: J. Meikle, R. Scorer (backs); R. Simpson (forward). Schoolboys’ team to meet Runanga boys on Monday June 4 at Blackball Domain at 1.30 p.m. will be:—W. Parsonage, P. Bailey, F. Caldwell (Capt.), H. Whear, R. Williams, W. Balderstone, T. Anderson, S. Clark, A. Vaughan, H. Hogg, D. Jamieson. Emergencies: J. Ashurst, H. Naylor, J. Penman. SHRIMPS’ MATCH. The following teams met at the Recleotion Ground on Saturday last: Blackball—AV. Parsonage, P. Bailey, F. Caldwell (captain), H. Whear, R. Williams. W. Balderstone, T. Anderson, S. Clark, A. Vaughan, 11. Hogg. I). Jamieson. Grey Main.—E. Kibble, Cashmore, Groom. Neubauer, Buckley, Williams, Webster, Harvey, Sharp, White, and Moore. Caldwell won the toss and elected to

play with a glaring sun behind them G rey were the first to attack, but Williams cleared and took play into Main, quarters, Cashmore booting clear. Blackball returned by neat combination by Balderstone, Hogg and Jamieson, and threatened danger to the home goal, but Kibble caught well and relieved the pressure for a time. Sharp hereabouts put in a solo effort down the centre, beating two or three opponents by neat footwork, but Caldwell returned the ball up the field'once again, Anderson putting behind. From the goal kick, Main attacked through White and Moore, sending the ball across the Blackball goal mouth for Sharp to narrowly miss the post with his shot. Blackball returned. Vaughan opened play on the left wing, but Hogg sent past. End-to-end play ensued for a considerable time, both sides putting in neat movements. Time and again smart footwork by Williams (Blackball) put his side on the attack once again, and on one of the Main defenders handling the ball, saw Caldwell open the scoring for the' visitors from the ensuing free kick. Resuming, Grey became dangerous, but overeagerness spoilt their chances on numerous occasions. Anderson from a pass by Whear got. away for Blackball, but his centre kick was charged down by Groom. Away went Moore on the Main' left, and forced a corner kick but Clark cleared. Williams and Balderstone at half-back were outstanding for the visiting team, Williams in particular showing neat footwork and extricating his side from many awkward positions. When Main forwards attacked his goal, Blackball once more assumed the offensive, Vaughan taking the ball down the centre, sending out to the left, when challenged by Cashmore, saw Hogg run in and shoot for goal. The ball cannoned off Groom and beat gabble, who had run out to save. Both teams renewed the attack at various stages of the game, but nothing further was added to the score. Half-time score: Blackball 2, Main 0.

Re-starting, the first item of note was a fine solo, effort down the centre by Sharp, but Caldwell relieved, the situation. Clever play by Whear, Clark, and Anderson saw Blackball once more on the attack, but Neubauer cleared to midfield. Webster essayed to get away on the right, but first Balderstone and then Williams tackled well, and carried play to midfield once again Hereabouts, a . deal of end-to-end play ensued. Sharp, White and Moore carrying play into the Blackball territory, only for the ball to be returned by neat combination by the visiting forwards. Anderson . crossed into the centre. Vaughan gathered the ball on the run, and when opposed by Cashmore and Groom put out to the left wing, where Jamieson missed an easy chance to increase the score by over-running the ball. Give-and-take play was the order from now on. Both sides put in some neat footwork on several occasions, however no further scoring took place, the final whistle sounding with the score board reading: Blackball Boys 2, Grey Main 0. .....
