HOCKEY

HIGH SCORING.

Two games were played in the West Coast Ladies’ Hockey Association’s senior competition yesterday, Cobden and United A recording comfortable wins. Owing to the inability of the Hokitika team to make the trip Lu Greymouth, the Mawhera-llokitika match was postponed. Runanga had their first game of the season, but after holding United A in the first spell, fell away in the second spell. Following are the positions of the

COBDEN 5; UNITED B, 0. The teams were: — Cobden: Mrs McKane, D. Dewar, K. Clarke, M. Dixon, M. Howard, L . Kelly, N. Baird. K. McGirr, D. Gordon, H. Nelson. United B: R. Cooper, M. Addison, D Swift, D. Turtill, D. Nash, K. Flaherty, I. McHugh, M. Seebeck, M. Dellabosca, H. Gilmour, H. McHugh. Referee: Mr C. L. King. Cobden, playing one short, attacked for the greater portion of the first spell, notching three goals, two to B. Gordon and one to H. Nelson. Cobden should have scored on several occasions, but their shooting lacked accuracy, while the wings preferred to crowd into the circle instead of centring, a fault also of the halves, whose passing to the forwards was not well directed. The Cobden team has the makings of a good side with more snap and accuracy in passing. United B have a lot to learn. In the second spell, B. Gordon and H. Nelson scored for Cobden, bringing their total to five. D. Nash, D. Turtill, and K. Sutton were the pick of the United team, the first-named making several good runs. The United forwards are inclined to wander out of position too much, and it was not uncommon to see four of them defending or attacking on the wing. N. Baird, a new player, shaped well on the right wing for Cobden. Mrs McKane had little to do in goal. D. Dewar was safe at full and her work was made easy by the opposing forwards giving her ample room in which to clear. The halves should learn to feed their forwards more accurately. Their passing was weak.

UNITED A 4; RUNANGA 1. The teams were: — United A: E. Turtill, J. Hughes, Mrs Parfitt, Mrs Clarke, M. Steel, E. Peillon, I. Boddy, L. Boddy, G. Grant, N. Castles, E. Sands. Runanga: A. Newton, L. Wright, P. Powell, N Kaye, Mrs O’Neill, N. Rose, Mrs Smith, D. Marshall, E. Harrison, Mrs Finn, Miss Malpass. Referee, Mr Smith. Although the ground at Dunollie was not in good order for hockey, a fast and bright game ensued. United showed better combination and due to the scoring ability of Miss E. Sands, a new player and ex-New Zealand representative, won by four goals to 1. Runanga led at half-time by 1 to nil, a goal shot by M. Malpass from a scramble in the United circle. This reverse spurred United on, and in the second spell they did most of the attacking and gave the Runanga defence a busy time, E. Sands netting three goals, and G. Grant one. For Runanga, Mrs Smith on the wing was the outstanding player. A. Newton, in goal, acquitted herself well, and was mainly responsible for keeping the United score down. The team was having its first game and is certain to improve with more match play. E. Harrison at centre forward played well, but the muddy state of the centre of the field made good stick work difficult 1 . The United team has improved in many respects and give promise of developing into a good combination. E. Sands, the new wing, is a decided acquisition, being fast, while her stick work was clever. G. Grant, at bully, played confidently, and was 'responsible for United’s fourth goal. Mrs Clarke and J. Hughes did good work and repeatedly got their team out. of trouble. Mrs Clarke’s foot and stick work are good and an example to other backs. ASSOCIATION MEETING. Mr W. Bring presided at last evening’s meeting of the West Coast Ladies’ Hockev Association. There were also present: Misses J. Hughes, E. Peillon (United), D. Dewar, B. Gordon (Cobiien), L. Wright, E. Harrison (Runanga), Messrs P. Richmond (Hokitika), C. L. King (Secretary).
