NELSON EDUCATION BOARD. (Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held at Nelson on Monday, when the following business was transacted: — The report of the Agricultural Instructor (Mr Bruce) was read and adopted. It showed that the wdrk was in most cases carried out in a satisfactory manner. The tender of Messrs Robertson Bros, was accepted for the erection of a sanitary block at. Hampden Street School, at £378/6/0; also that of L. Powick (£65) for additions to Cape Foulwind School. It was decided to inform th e Burnett’s Face Committee that the Board regrets it cannot take any action regarding a site for a teacher’s residence. The Department wrote authorising removal of the Te Kuha school to Tararoa, on the Westport road, in connection with the extension of the railway, and approving of the appointment of a teacher for the school. The committee at Lower Takaka was asked to raise £5O towards the cost of the erection of new outbuildings and a septic tank, which are estimated to cost £350. ‘lt was resolved that Mr Harkness and Mr Mclntyre inteiview the clerk v£ the Murchison Council -with regard to improving the Nuggety Creek road at which place it is intended to erect a new school. The Westport committee wrote asking if the Board would lease a small portion of the school grounds for the erection of a, dental clinic, Plunket offices and public, rdst room. —It was decided to grant the request at a. nominal rental, provided the Department were willing. Requests from Committees were dealt with as follows: —Burnett’s Face, wood and coal shed to be erected and repairs to verandah to be carried out; Cape Foulwind. £lO for fencing; Dovedale, £5 for incidental expenses; Fox bill, woodshed to be erected and lavatory conditions to be improved; Hamama, brick chimney to be erected: Kiwi, chimney to be repaired; Millerton, architect authorised to carry out necessary repairs; Punakaiki, A. V. Nisbet’s tender to be accepted for painting the school buildings, £4O. The report of the architect showed that the dental clinic at Reefton was proceeding satisfactorily; also recommended that the Tui and Kiwi schools be painted. The Board’s annual report was received and ordered Io be circulated among the members of the Board. The Department wrote stating that they intended carrying out the policy of remodelling certain schools, so that teachers would have one room to themselves, and asking the Board to submit the names of four schools most urgent, this was acceded to, and the following schools were selected:--Hampden Street, Millerton, Reefton, and Richmond The Department wrote calling the attention of committees to the fact I hat they wodhl not subsidise contributions lor the erection of dental clinics, etc., unless their-approval had been first obtained.
