Mr G. A. K. St. aimers, Assistant Resident Engineer of Railways, arrived this afternoon from Christchurch.

Mr W. A. F. Brodie, who has been visiting the West Coast, left to-day tor Christchurch.

Mr H. Rattray left to-day for Christchurch and expects to return on Saturday.

Mrs J. Walton, who was operated on last week at the Grey Hospital, is making satisfactory progress.

Mrs F. Rosel who underwent an operation at the Grey Hospital on Tuesday, is progressing satisfactorily. Messrs J. Waller and A. K. England, who have been inspecting their sawmill interests on the West Coast, returned to-day to Christchurch. The death is announced from London of the Duke of Newcastle. He was born in 1864, and succeeded his father in 1879. Mr R. B. Spiers, a member of the United Party Executive, has been chosen as that Party’s candidate for Auckland City West.—Press Assn. z Mr R. MottramTof the Survey Department, Hokitika, is under orders for transfer to Christchurch, for which place he leaves in about a month s timb. Mr Robert Bell, of Christchurch, left on Tuesday for Wellington, en. route for British Columbia and Alaska. Mr ' Bell expects to return about the end of October. A cablegram from Vancouver stated that the Niagara sailed at noon yesterday with 250 passengers, including Sir James Gunson and Shira Cherkassy (pianist). Miss M’Pherson (Hawera) who has been visiting her parents, returned this morning. Her father, who is an in- . mate of the hospital is progressing satisfactorily. / Mr H. O. Judd, Manager of the West Coast Farmers’ Co-op. Dairy Co. Ltd., left this morning for Auckland, and will be present at the Waikato A. and P, Winter Show. He was accompanied by Mrs Judd. Guests at Revingfon’s Hotel include: Misses E. Hodge (Dunedin), Herbert (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs Herbert (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs J. F. Stanley (Westport), Messrs J. Scott (Nelson), Bostock (Christchurch); J. F. , Norman (Dunedin), H. Jones (Wel- ' lington), Bryan (Westport). The death has occurred at New Plymouth of Mr H. Robinson, a brother of the late Mr T. Robinson, of Hokitika. Deceased was a native of England and'was 70 years of age. He leaves one brother, residing near Auckland, and two sisters, one living in Christchurch, and the other in .America. In his early days the late Mr. Robinson resided at Brunner.

Mrs A. C. Carr, the President of the Greymouth branch of the Plunket Society, was yesterday afternoon entertained at the residence of Mrs F. M. Dennehy, when-a rejiresentative gathering of members assembled. Mrs Carr was) presented with a handsome handbag as a parting gift, and in recognition of her services as President ever since the Greyihouth branch was established. Nurse Spring, who made the x presentation, referred to the valued work done by Mrs Carr during the four years she had held office. She hoped Mrs Carr would continue her interest in the Society, at Picton, whither she was going in a few days. Mrs Carr expressed her thanks for the useful gift, and to Nurse Spring for her good wishes. She had enjoyed working with the other members of the Society, in advancing the interests of the Plunket movement on the West Coast. The hostess, Mrs Denneby, provided a sumptuous afternoon tea, and those present were entertained with some novel competitions, the winners being Mesdames Bell (Cobden), and- J. R. Moore. Before the gathering dispersed Mrs Denton (secretary) moved a vote of thanks to Mrs Dennehy for her hospitality, and this -was carried by acclamation.
