U.S.A. PRESIDENCY

GOVERNOR SMITH’S EXPENSES. (Australian Press Ass;;.—United Service.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received May 11, 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 10. George Van Namee, campaign manager for Governor Smith, told the Senate Investigation Committee that Smith’s headquarters here collected 103,301 dollars, and spent 92,090, of which the largest sum. 41,500, went, to Justus Wardell of San Francisco, the agent for California. Van Namee said the only reason any money had been spent was because of “the scurrilous attacks that had been circulated against the Governor in the South and the West.” Governor Smith himself, told the Committee that he had not “done a single thing" to obtain the Democratic Presidential nomination. He added: “I have not any plans for the campaign. I promised the people of this State, when Inaugurated, that I would do nothing that would take time from my discharge of the duties as Governor.” - He said that he knew nothing regarding receipts and expenditures of the campaign headquarters. INDIANA OPPOSES HOOVER. WASHINGTON, May 9. As the result of the Indiana primaries, Air Hoover’s managers are now admitting Mr Hoover’s defeat by at least 25,000 of a majority, and they admit also the certainty of Senator Watson obtaining practically all the State’s 33 Republican delegates. Therefore a radical change in tile Hoover, situation has occurred. It is now difficult to state exactly how strong the anti-Hoover forces will appear at Kansas City. No more important Primary tests are scheduled before June 12. / LOOKING TO COOtIDGE. NEW YORK,- May 9. It is understood that the New York State Republican Organisation, as the result of Mr Hoover’s defeat at 'lndiana, has reaffirmed its Intention of offering President Coolidge at the first ballot at Kansas City, unless the President makes it clear that he will not accept nomination.
