MODERN DRESS
“MORE ON TOP—LESS BELOW.” (Special to “Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, April 27. A short discussion on modern girls’ dress took place at the Magistrate s Court this morning. A civil case was proceeding, and Dr W. H. Simpson was giving evidence as to the degree of injury received by a girl, who had been injured in the cli est “Would the scar on the chest be visible if the girl wore evening dress,” asked Mr Thomas, counsel for the plaintiff. “Yes,” replied Dr Simpson. “That is in modern evening dress.” “Oh, I understood that dress in the Mid-Victorian period was worse than modern day dress,” said Mr Thomas. “They have taken more off below, and put it on top,” commented the Magistrate (Mr H. P. Lawry). _ A few minutes later discussion took place on the question of damages for physical injury' to a . person,; Mr Thomas quoting a previous case m which heavy' damages had been awarded for facial injury. The Magistrate expressed surprise at the amount. „ “Beauty has a premium nowadays, said Mr Thomas.
