(Special to “Star.”) TIMARU, April 27. All the acceptors for the Timaru Cup Handicap went to the post. In a good betting race, Battle Colours was .a fifty tickets better favourite than Overhaul. The race was not of an interesting nature and gave rise to little enthusiasm during the running. When the field left the straight the first time, Battle Colours and King Balboa led from Don Jose, Tintoretto, Gay Sonnet, Fresco and Front Rank. Along the back Gay Sonnet, who was last to leave the mark, rushed to the .front and led to the far turn from King Balboa, Battle Colours, Don Jose, Tintoretto, Fresco, Assurance, Overhaul and Sir Roy with Front Rank last. Gay Sonnet retired from the lead at the top of the straight. It was then seen that the finish would rest between Battle Colours and King Balboa. The former had the upper hand throughout the final stages and won ip an easy manner by a clear length? Carnot finished third three lengths away. Then at an interval of four lengths came Don Jose, ,Gay Sonnet, Assurance, Fresco, Overhaul, Tintoretto, Front Rank, with Sir Roy a bad last. Battle Colours’ victory was most pronounced. He never showed signs of defeat. Once heads were turned for home, King Balboa stuck to him well down the straight, but only under sufferance. The remainder of the contestants require little comment, as they spread out down the track at the finish. NELSON ACCEPTANCES. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Register.”) GALLOPING FIXTURES, May 3, 5. —Nelson J.C. TROTTING FIXTURES.April 28. —Wellington T.C. GALLOPING. The accident which occurred to King’s Jester during his recent visit to the -West Coast left an ugly flesh wound on one of his legs. This is healing up slowly, and no serious effects are expected. The following West Coast horses have accepted for the Nelson Meeting: Steel Bar, Smithereens, Corn Rigs, Anthonie, Atone, Tip Tree, Pickaninny. The acceptances foi' the Nelson Cup are disppointing, and the race looks a two-horse contest, with Black Mint and Discourse a class above their opponents. A Sydney paper says : —New Zealand has sent some great horses to Australia, and Limerick ads to the number. He is a champion from oho mile to two miles, and in 23 wins and various minor placing has earned £31,670. . . . Sixteen of his victories have been in Sydney, and he was never seen to greater advantage than in the King’s Cup on Saturday week. Mr H. A. Knight (owner), ‘F. D. Jones (trainer) and M. McCarten (jockey) have reason to be proud of him. It was stated that Mr J. S. Barrett’ could have sold the gelding Satrap (Paladin-Persian Lilac) to an Australian buyer last month for 2000gns. He wanted SOOOgns, and had little cause for regret that negotiations fell through. The Northern St. Leger, run at Auckland on Easter Monday, carried £6OO for first place, and even before th! close of this season he may win another race or two. As Satrap cost only 150gns as a yearling, Mr Barrett is evidently one of Fortune’s favourites.

Trentham (Wellington) is a wonderfully fast track, the Australasian records made on it being as under: —_ Four Furlongs. —45sec. Gloaming (9.1), January, 1921. Six Furlongs.—lmin 9 4-ssec, The Hawk (9.2), January, 1922. One mile three furlongs.—2min 17 sec, Star Stranger (9.5), January, 1927. One and three-quarter miles. —2min 57-gsec Commendation (8.7), March, 1927. n| Two miles. —Star Stranger, 3min 22- 4 sec (9.4), March, 1928. There is an electric clock at Trentham, and when Star Stranger made his recent record, several private watches made the time 3.22. lhe Hawk shares the AustraJasian six fui longs record with Chimera, who made her time at Kiccarton (Christchuich). Maurice McCarten, who has been asociated with Limerick in his successes in the Commonwealth, is haying a good season. At present he is second on the jockeys’ list in Australia, and as he rides for several big owner's, his income must be a good deal larger than it would have been had he remained in New Zealand. Mc-

Carten is highly respected, and deserves to be, as he is a man and a first-class jockey.
