JOCKEY ACCUSED

OF RAPE AT DANCE. (Per Press Association.) # ■ MASTERTON, Ap'ril 27. Walter Scott Bagby, a jockey, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court today with having, on April 14, at Masterton, committed rape on a girl, aged 18A years. The court was cleared during the hearing of the evidence. The offence was alleged to have taken place at the rear of the Central Arcade, while a dance was being held in the hall.

Complainant stated that she did not offer accused any encouragement to act in the manner in which he did. Several witnesses were called for the defence, with a view to a rebuttal of complainant’s statement regarding the time alleged of the offence and attendant circumstances. The case was adjourned till Saturday morning, when further witnesses for the defence will be called. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. MASTERTON, April 28. Walter Scott Bagby, on the rape charge, this morning was committed for trial at Masterton on September '4. Bail was allowed in self £lOOO and two sureties of £5OO each.
