LARGEST SIGNAL CABIN
LONDON’S NEW SYSTEM. When the new signal cabin on the Southern Railway at London Bridge is brought into operation in June, five existing signal-boxes, containing Gts mechanical levers, will be dismantled. The new cabin, which is stated to be the largest of its kind in the world, contains 311 electrically operated levers, which will control about 2,000 trains a day by the three-and-four aspect colour light signalling system. Two and a half miles of track (from
London Bridge to Bricklayers’ Arms Junction, near New Crow), containing ton and 11 sets of metals, as well as Hie intricate working in the central station, the low-level station, and the high-level station, will be under the control of Hie cabin. The progress of trains will be ’Ahown by coloured lights on a large route diagram in the cabin. Sixteen signalmen and eight signal-lads will be employed in the cabin. Miniature levers, barely Gin. high, will take the place of the heavy, old-fashioned levers.
