COMBINED MUSICAL SOCIETIES

An interesting meeting was held last evening at Wesley Hall to consider a musical programme to be rendered by the combined choirs of the Ladies’ Musical Society and the Male Choir. The Ladies’ Choir was represented by Mesdames Garth, McQueen, Bell and Palmer and Misses C. Tennent, Cottle and Savage ; the Male Choir representatives being Messrs Savage, McDowall, Hadland, Howes and Nelson. Mr Savage was elected to the chair. The object of the meeting was defined. It had been thought by a number of people that a combined concert would be very much enjoyed by the citizens of Greymouth, and interest would be stimulated in the individual choirs. It was decided to take all resolutions as though the main 'effort was agreed upon, to facilitate discussion. All resolutions were unanimous, and the final one decided that the plans be carried into operation. The decisions were as follow : —That Mr T. F. Savage control the combined concert, as conductor-; that Edward German’s comic opera, “Merrie England” (concert arrangement) be the piece performed; that Miss C. K. Tennent be secretarytreasurer for the occasion, assisted by Mr IT. Howes; that lady and gentlemen vocalists be admitted only on condition of attaching themselves to the Male Choir (per Mr Harley) or to the Ladies’ Musical Society (per Miss Tennent) ; that soloists be chosen locally, and, preferably (at the discretion of the conductor) from the existing societies ; that Mr Savage arrange for orchestral accompaniment, and that all instrumentalists willing to assist, approach Mr Savage without delay; that the Male Choir be responsible for the stage arrangements, and the ladies for decorations.
