MONEY WITH MENACES

LONDON, February 12

Stanley Thomas, a young seaman, whose home is near Aberystwyth, was charged on remand at Marylebone with demanding a picture, valued at £7 10/and a sum of £lO, by menaces from Philip James Moore, fine art dealer. Edgware Road. He was also charged with having a revolver and twelve cartridges without a certificate. Prisoner, a man of slight build, was arrested in Hyde Park Gardens, and, on being taken back to the shop, he admitted that he had a revolver and offered to unload it. Two constables seized him and took the weapon from his coat pocket. Detective-Sergeant McTaggart stated that Thomas entered Mr Moore’s shop and asked to see some pictures. Mr Moore showed him round and prisoner asked for change for a £lO note. Mr Moore said he had not got it. Thomas drew out a revolver and exclaimed: “Don’t move.” Mi- Moore grappled with the man, who, after a struggle, ran out of the shop. A youth of IS, Stanley Watkins, went in pursuit. The prisoner urged that, after being paid off his ship, he was robbed of all he had and left stranded. He went into tho shop to see the pictures and pulled the “gun” out of his pocket “for the gentleman to see.” He was sentenced to two months’ hard labour for the attempted larceny, and fined £lO or fourteen days’ imprisonment for having a revolver without a certificate.
