HARBOUR RACE
AUCKLAND’S NEW RECORD
(Special to '‘Star.’’)
AUCKLAND, March 26.
One of the longest harbour races attempted in New Zealand, was decided yesterday, when A. E. Baird and R. J. Webster, swam from Prince's wharf launch steps to Milford Beach, a distance of approximately nine miles. Starting at 9.35, Baird reached his destination at 12.55, ten minutes ahead of Webster. Baird was in the water for three hours 20 minutes. The achievement of both Baird and Webster in < covering this long distance eclipses other recent Auckland performances. On February 13, J. D. Foster, aged 53, swam from Point Chevalier to Devonport, a distance of six miles. On March 12, R. H. Stevenson, aged 5&, swam from Pine Island to the steps at Ferry Wharf, a distance of seven miles. L. Waters, whorecently endeavoured to swim from Whau Bridge to Prince’s Wharf- also desired to swim over the same course yesterday, but was unable to obtain a boat to accompany him.
