CANTEEN RAIDED
MILITARY TRAINEES FINED.
SYDNEY, March 12.
The story of a recent raid upon a canteen by military trainees who got out of control during a sham fight at Mount Wilson, near Liverpool, on February 10, was recounted in the Liverpool Court. It was stated that' the whole of the goods on the lorry, valued at £B/10/were stolen. Harold Ward, I a trainee, pleaded guilty to having stolen a bottle of ginger beer and some biscuits from the canteen, and Reginald W. W. Coleman who did not appear, was charged with having stolen two ice creams. Constable Somers submitted a Statement made to him by Coleman, which ran: “I saw a crowd gathered round the canteen, and I went up. There was a bun rush, and we all grabbed something. The man in charge of the canteen tried to keep us off with a big knife, and I got a cut over the hand.”
Reynolds, the owner of the canteen, said he wanted only a nominal penalty, as a warning to the other trainees, and the magistrate imposed fines of 10/- and 8/- costs.
