The Poolta is due on Wednesday from Bluff. She will load coal for Auckland and Gisborne, completing at Westport. The Kaituna is due on Friday from Wellington to load poles ,timber and coal for Auckland.

The Kamona is due on Thursday from Auckland. She will load coal for Wellington and Napier. The Kaimai is due back from Wellington next Saturday. She will load coal and timber for Wellington and timber for Miramar.

The Kanna is due to-morrow from Wellington. She will load coal and timber for return. The Putiki is due on Wednesday from Tokomaru Bay. On arrival she loads timber and coal for Waikokopu. The Ihumata is loading timber for Melbourne and Sydney, and is scheduled to sail to-night. The Gabriella is due from Wanganui on Friday to load timber for Sydney. The Titoki sailed this morning for Westport to complete loading coal for Tarakohe. ’

The Alexander leaves Lyttelton on Monday'for Nelson, Westport and Greymouth with general cargo. After discharge she will load for Motueka. The Regulus is due from Wanganui on Monday to load coal for Onakaka. The Orepuki leaves Nelson this afternoon for Greymouth, via Westport, with general cargo. SAILING SHIP SOLD. LONDON, March 23. The sailing vessel, E. R. Sterling was sold at Sunderland for breakingup. NOTED MARINER RETIRING. Captain Sir James Charles, commodore of the Cunard fleet since 1921, and master of the Aquitania, is retiring. Oh the conclusion of his present voyage to Southampton, he will relinquish the command he has held for ten years, and go on shore duty until May, when he will be relief captain until his retirement in August. Sir James will be succeeded on the Aquitania by Captain E. G. Diggle, master of the Mauretania, which holds the speed record of three days twentythree hours for the Atlantic. Captain Samuel J. McNeil will be master of the Mauretania.

Captain Charles, born in England, went to sea in 1880, and spent his early years in a 500-ton marques beatinground Cape Horn. One vessel was burned, one was wrecked in the North Sea, and another ship was sunk under him in a collision. Aftejr that, his life afloat was fairly comfortable. He is a commodore of the Royal Naval Reserve on the retired list, and has served as aide-de-camp to the King. He was knighted for his war services. He commanded the Mauretania at the time of the sinking of the Lusitania by a German submarine. He was nautical adviser to the British delegation to the international conference on safety of life at sea, held in the year before the Great War.
