CHRISTCHURCH NEWS

ARTHUR’S PASS RESERVE. (Special to "Star.")

CHRISTCHURCH, March 24. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) announced yesterday that a public meeting will be held on April 3 to consider setting up a. board to control Arthur’s Pass as a national park on lines similar to bodies in existence which control Tongariro and Mount Egmont national, parks. The decision that the setting up of such a body is desirable is likely to be followed by a suggestion of the names of the gentlemen who would be willing to act on the boa I'd. These will be forwarded <to the Government, which has power to set up a. board. Arrangements have been made for Mr W. A. Kennedy to give a display of lantern slides depicting the region at the public meeting. ’QUAKE PREDICTIONS. A cable message from Rome was published yesterday stating that, according to Signor Bendandi, the Italian seismologist, a-powerful earthquake was imminent and a’ big telluric movement -would occur simultaneously in Southern Europe and in some submarine zonfes in the South Pacific. In connection with this prognostication, it is interesting to note that a large earthquake with arcual epicentral distance of apparently about 98 degrees from Christchurch, was recorded at five minutes past 4 p.m. (New Zealand standard time) on Thursday, March 22, on the seismograph at the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory.
