REEFTON NOTES

’Dor Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, March 24. Mr J. Burley who has been on a business visit to Christchurch returned home on Thursday. Mr Thos. Patterson is laid up with an attack of influenza. Drought conditions have been relieved by heavy rain during the night which has done a lot of good and helped to smother the bush fires in the neighbourhood. More'rain is wanted. A meeting of the Reefton cricket club was held in the club rooms on Thursday evening, Mr C. Tattley, occupying the chair. Present: Messrs C. Hendry, W. Carden, C. Tattley, J. Wills, J. McDonald, J. Warren, H. Hudson, T. Hunt, and J. Mclvor, Secretary. It was agreed that the Reefton Club play a return match with St. Canice’s Cricket Club, Westport on Sunday, April 1. It was resolved that a return match married v. single men be played on the Reefton racecourse on Sunday at 1 p.m. It was agreed that two men be appointed to look after the refreshments at cricket matches held on the racecourse. This rule to be severely enforced. Mr J. Wills and the secretary were appointed. If was resolved that the club have a table at the gate for voluntary donations from the public, the same as football unions. A boys’ bicycle road race around the station and return took place last evening when five riders faced the starter. A strong wind was blowing and the lads had a hard ride. The result was a win for E. Strachan, time 9min. 35sec. from A. Hill 9.365ec by about two lengths with E. Topp three lengths further back third. Also started: W. Lockington, H. Patterson. The last-named lad, who is on the small side, competing against much bigger boys, rode a willing race. The Fire Brigade received a call last night about seven o’clock, the cause being a fire of blackberry bushes near the residence of Mr H. Lockington, in Buller Road. The fire was extinguished before any damage was done to Mr Lockington’s property, which at one time looked like being attacked by the spread of th? fire. An amusing episode in connection with the fire was that at the sound of the bell, a number of cyclists made for the locality without 'their bike lights, the result being that the police made a “big bag.’’
