EDUCATION BOARD
WEST COAST BUSINESS. (Special to “Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, March 23. At to-day’s meeting of the Canterbury Education .Board, in connection with the West Coast A. and P. and I. Association’s Shield competition, it was agreed that Messrs Wild and Bignell be asked to represent the Board at the presentation of the Shield to Ngahere School. It was recommended that M.iss A. Fleming be appointed sewing mistress at Kokatahi Upper School. Mr W. H. Johnston’s report for February on the agricultural work in West Coast schools was as follows: —The following schools have been visited and instruction given on some phases of the work: Kokiri, Taylorville, Dob-
, son, Kaiata, Stillwater, Camerons, ' Paroa, Awatuna, Aratika, Kotuku, Ru- ’ nanga, Totara Flat, Ahaura; Barrytown, Cobden, Greymouth, Wallis Sid- ! ing. The chief work to be done on resuming after holidays is cleaning up plots and harvesting what happens to be ripe. This has been satisfactorily done in all places. I have visited. In a few cases, the pupils in the upper classes kept their plots weeded during the holidays. The abnormally dry - season has had marked effect on the whole district in comparison with wet conditions generally prevailing, and will provide subject matter for useful lessons. At the Agricultural Pastoral and Industrial Association’s Show several schools entered exhibits and were successful in securing prizes. I have inspected a few swede crops, which are being grown for the purpose of testing out the value of wood ash in preventing mottled heart disease. All show evidence of solid work and commendable zeal on the part of the competitors. I have to report I was unable to arrange for the presentation of the Ashby Bergh Shield to Ngahere school during the Jubilee celebrations. This was in part due to Mr Spencer’s inability to be present, but mostly to the fact that the secretary was unable to allot me a place, for the function in the programme. The Building Committee reported: — Cobden: It was resolved to grant the comffiittee’s application for payment of an account of £5 for clearing noxious weeds from the school grounds. Wataroa: The Department wrote de- : dining to make a grant for the erection of a residence, as the married . teacher had been transferred to an- ( other school, and a single teacher ap- ' pointed in his place.
