MOTOR CYCLIST INJURED. OAMARU, March 23. As the result of a collision near Enfield this afternoon, between a car, driven by William Patterson, of Oamaru, and a motor cycle proceeding in the opposite direction, a motor cyclist named Francis Wallace, aged 19, was conveyed to the. hospital suffering from a fractured leg.
GISBORNE MAYORALTY. GISBORNE, March 23.
The election for the Mayoralty, caused by the death of Mr C. E. Armstrong resulted in the return of Mr D. W. Coleman (Labour) with 1760 votes, who beat Mr J. Blair, Deputy Mayor (Citizens’ candidate) 1737, and Mr A. Wade (Citizens’ candidate) 951.
WIDOW’S COMPENSATION. WELLINGTON, March 23.
Compensation amounting to £lOOO was awarded in the Arbitration Court to-day to a widow, Emma Sheppard, of Karori, whose husband lost his life as a result of injuries received while in the employ of Mitchell and King, contractors. Funeral and medical expenses, amounting to £24 10s, were alowed plaintiff. A few minutes were sufficient for the case to be disposed of, judgment being given by consent.
KILLED BY TRACTOR. CARTERTON, March 23.
A tragic happening occurred at Parkvale this afternoon, where Samuel McGovern, a farmer, aged 45, was engaged working in the fields with a motor tractor. He attempted to cross a drain when the tractor reared up and fell backwards, pinning him beneath. His body was badly crushed, and death was almost instantaneous. Deceased leaves a widow and a young family of four. An inquest will be held.
OTAGO ANNIVERSARY. ■ DUNEDIN, March 23.
The eightieth anniversary of the Province of Otago was celebrated today in generally fine weather. Though it was overcast in the morning, conditions were warm throughout the day and the sun came out during most of the afternoon. Sports of all kinds were held, including bowling matches, and a swimming race in the harbour. There were races at Wingatui and a carnival at St. Kilda, which, though not part of the celebrations, drew great crowds. Tlje Early Settlers’ Association held an official celebration in the afternoon and evening, taking the form of a re-union of pioneers of the Province. A concert was held in the evening. The occasion was recognised as a general holiday.
