CRICKET
AUCKLAND v. AUSTRALIA
(Per Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, March 9.
The Australian cricket team commenced a match against Auckland at Eden Park to-day, and having first use of the wicket, compiled 418 for the loss of six wickets. A feature of the innings was the prolific fourth wicket partnership between Richardson and Alexander, which added 201 runs in two hours ten minutes. Losing the toss under ideal conditions, it was expected that the Auckland bowlers would be severely tested, and such proved to be the case. Nine trundlers were given a turn at the crease during the day. Woodfull and Ponsford gave their side a good start by making 86 for the first ' wicket, when Ponsford was dismissed by a brilliant catch by Bowley. He and Woodfull both batted well. Richardson and Alexander gave bright exhibitions, the former making a century in two hours, including fifteen fours. Both gave chances in the twenties. Jackson gave an impressive display for 46. G. L. Weir and Bowley were the most successful bowlers, each taking'two wickets, the former for 53 runs and the latter for 67. Scores:— AUSTRALIA—First Innings.
