NOTES ON THE TROTTING (Special to "Star.") TIMARU, March 10.

Rey Logan was the only scratching for the Timaru Trotting Cup, for which Daphne De Oro and Colene Pointer were the best backed. Ariki refused to begin when the word was given, and Young Blake lost a lot of ground. Colene Pointer was always at or near the front, while Bonny Spec, Succession, Epigram and Daphne De Oro were handy. Author Jinks was running in behind the field as the straight was entered. It seemed that Author Jinks would win, for one long run had taken him into second place just in front of Billy Sea and Daphne De Oro. The last named put in a great effort, and actually headed Colene Pointer before the post was reached, but the effort was just too much for her. The older mare’s superior stamina stood to her in an exciting finish. After a good race Author Jinks did not finish on in the manner expected of him. Neither did Billy Sea, who looked to have a royal chance in the straight. Succession and Epigram both raced well until the real business commenced, when they faded badly. It seemed that the race would do the latter a lot of good. King Pointer lost ground at the start and was never dangerous. Jean McEwan went nicely for a mile and a quarter. Kotuku Jack was finishing particularly w'ell after losing ground in the early part. NAPIER PARK R.C.

NAPIER, March 9.

(By “Register”) GALLOPING.

The handicaps foi* the Westport J.C. Meeting will be declared on Monday. The North Island gelding, Arch Arrow, who will be raced on the West Coast Easter circuit, might prove a useful proposition to a Coast owner. The continued success of the three-year-old Discourse recalls that her dam, Ladify, raced with considerable success on the Coast several years ago. A northern writer has stated :—For a three-year-old filly Discourse carried big weights with great credit, when she won with 9.3 and ran second with 9.13 at Dannevirke. Both performances can be accepted as evidence that she will be able to run a good middle distance. Her engagements at the Wellington Meeting include the New Zealand St. Leger, and it is quite on the cards that if she starts she will participate in the stake money allocated to the mile and three-quarter classic. In her last ten starts, Discourse has recorded five wins and three seconds. The dam, Ladify, was raced and trained in the North Island during her career. When seven years, she was purchased by Mr J. J. O’Reegan, of Shannon, and was several times brought to the Coast, where her best performances included winning the Inangahua Cup in 1919, ridden by V. Lee, the well-known Greymouth jockey, and third to King of the Valley and Xanthos in the Greymouth Cup. Ladify’s record was 10 wins, 12 seconds, 12 thirds, and 65 unplaced performances. .In 1924 she was mated with Gasbag and Discourse was foaled. The Omoto trainer, J. Stewart, has another by Ladify in his stable in Killadie, whose future will be followed with interest by those who knew the dam. Mr J. Ryall, Barrytown, has purchased St. Nicholas, who will in future be trained by J. Dale of Hokitika. The acceptances for the Wellington meeting which commences next Thursday, are excellent. There are 23 in the Thompson Handicap, of one mile, which must rank as one of the finest handicap fields of the season. Principal among those who dropped out were Reremoana, Cimabue, Great Charter, and Crown Area. Hynanna and Star Stranger occupy top position with 9.4 with Rapier 9.2. The three top weights represent stayers in a mile field. All three are set down to contest the Trentham Gold Cup of 2 miles on the second day. The sprinting class is represented from The Hawk down, and though the top weights possess brilliance over the distance, the winner seems more likely to come from lower down in the weights. Kiosk is a brilliant sprinter, and his recent successes include the Jackson Stakes of six furlongs, in which he beat Reremoana. It still remains to be seen whether he can stay a mile, as he has no performances of note over this distance. Mundane has recently blossomed out as a slayer, and looks likely to be held safe by the three-year-old, Laughing Prince with 8.3, who won over a mile at the Auckland meeting. Joy King with 8.3, is an early favourite, and it will be difficult to oust him from that position. He was second in last year’s Thompson Handicap to Reremoana, and at the January Trentham meeting finished second to Goshawk in the Summer Handicap of one mile. Joy King carried 8.1 against 7T by Goshawk. Now their weights are 8.3 and 7.11, so that Joy King meets Goshawk on 71bs better terms. As against this, Goshawk is in wonderful form at present, and 7.11 should be no trouble to him. White Fang was favourite in the Napier Cup. After'leading for a mile he faded out, but the race should improve him. Tresham appears very well at present. He was second three years ago in the Thompson Handicap, and is working up nicely for the big mile race. Le Choucas is nicely placed with 7.11, while a useful bunch in Duke Abbey. Joy Bird, and Doree may show up well with 7.4, Lady Limond should command a lot of attention. She has shown exceptional speed in most of her races. In the Apprentices’ Plate at the Wellington January meeting she defeated Goshawk by six lengths. Lady Limond carried 7.1, and Goshawk 8.7. Lady Limond was also close up in the Summer Handicap, won by Goshawk. Sudden Storm won at the C.J.C. meeting over seven furlongs. He has yet to win over a. mile, but has been staying on well. The record of three-year-olds in this race is not outstanding, but the chances of Goshawk, Lady Limond and Laughing Prince appear excellent. Joy King and Tresham are a likely pair outside of these three-year-olds, while Sudden Storm and Le Choucas may upset calculations.
