BOXING

GREYMOUTH ASSOCIATION. Over forty nominations have already been received for next Saturday night s benefit tournament, nominations’ for which close to-night. This encouraging position was commented upon at last night’s meeting of the Greymouth Boxing Association, over which Mr. A. Beban presided. There were also present Messrs C. Chamley, S. Groom, H. Moore, W. Gieseking, N. Jones, G. Jones, L. McGlashan, W. Costello 'and tho secretary, F. W. Baillie. Mr. Beban remarked that the support so far received pointed to the tournament being one of the most successful ever held. Entries had been received from all over the C<yist. The following officials were appointed for the tournament: —Referees: A. Beban and F. O’Neill; timekeepers: J. D. Wingham and H. Moore; gong steward: E. Moss; weights stewards: C. Chamley and E. Kiely; ring stewards: S. Groom and G. Jones; call stewards: E. Ashton, W. Costello and N. Jones; glove stewards: W. Costello and N. Jones; official seconds: D. Mclvor, P. Gillon and J. Devescovie; draw stewards; G. E. Perkins and F. Denton. The Chairman stated that special bouts for the Casey-Broadfoot fight, on Easter Saturday, would be selected from next Saturday’s tournament. The Borough Council, having agreed to the Boxing Association’s request to hold a swimming carnival to augment the funds in aid of the widow of the late “Dick” Pascoe, a committee, comprising Messrs W. Gieseking, L. McGlashan, W. Costello and F. W. Baillie, was appointed to make full arrangements for a carnival to be held on March 20.

PURDY’S FIGHT. (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, March 10. At the Stadium to-night, sees the inauguration of the Australian and New Zealand Boxing championships, when Purdy (New Zealand) meets Jones (Australia) for the lightweight title. The “Guardian” says: Purdy is the finest boxer Australia has seen, displaying ability to fight with eagerness, which is making him a big draw with the crowd. He is a remarkably clever boxer and amazingly tough.”
