DETECTIVES' SMART WORK.

AUCKLAND, February 27. . ( After enjoying his liberty since ■Wednesday, Jiily 27,- of last year/ Wil114m Scholes. (38); who escaped iron? the custody ofa warder, on the Auckland bdiirid train at Piihuniii, was arrested on Friday afternoon in a house at’ Mount Albert. Fbr several weeks it (has been, known by deteptiyes that Scholes has been in Auckland, and fop some time past attentions endeavours have been made to effect his recapture, Many times the defectives, have waited for him in various places, oq more than one occasion iriiss'ihg hijn by a few minutes. Shortly before 2.30 p.m. on Friday, a big . police van. drew lip outside O’Rorke Street station, escorted by four detectives and a constable, fed-wm-Aiidrew Simpson (29) left the van heavily handcuffed and was ushered injto the defective office.. His arrest, which was effected under sensational circumstances at.. Domic? ion Road about midday yesterday, was the result, of a cleverly laid- police trap. Within an hoiir affer the detectives had warned Ddminioii Road grpcer on Friday morning to look out for a cheque bearing a trust demount injprint, Simpson walked into the shop with one for £7 to pay for a £2 order, and the proprietor ingeniously detained him (sending ah asslstarit to the neighbours to ’phone the police, although he had a ’phone in the store), until a constable arrived, whereupon Simpson bolted, clearing a sft 6ih fence easily. A motor car was requisitioned for the chase, a grocery employee finally getting him while caught, in a barbed wire fence. In the afternoon, the detectives went to a house in Mt. Albert and arrested Scholes. Both Simpson and Scholes appeared at the Court oh Saturday morning. Simpson was charged with attempting to; obtain goods and money of a tqtal value of £7 by a valueless cheque, and was remanded- until March 1 on bail Of £2OO. Scholes, of course, was charged with escaping from lawful custody. Bail was asked for, but was' refused, Chief Detective Hammond stating, that Scholes was an habitual criminal and an escapee. Therefore, he was not eligible to be bailed; .
