Twenty-live years ago, on Friday, January 30, 1903, to be correct, Lord Hawke's team of famous English cricketers arrived at Greymouth to play the West Coast representatives. They were tendered a formal welcome by the Mayor (the late Mr. W. H. Perkins senr.) and members of the Greymouth Cricket Club, and were the guests of the West Coast Cricket Association at an informal luncheon. In welcoming the visitors, the Mayor said it was about twenty-six years previously that another English team, that of Lilywhite, visited Westland, and he had the honour of being one of the Greymouth representatives on that occasion. This left the Englishmen with 106 runs to secure to win. In the second over, O’Donnell bowled Warner before the latter had scored, and the hopes of the Coasters rose; but the visitors obtained the necessary runs for the loss of five wickets, Burnup making the winning stroke. Speaking at the banquet after the match, Warner stated that although the Coasters were defeated, they need not be ashamed, as they had given the Englishmen the best game of the tour so far, their fielding being especially good.
