HUNDREDWEIGHT OF GOLD!
AN idea of the richness of mining claims on the beach in the early days, may be gathered from the fact, that about three miles South of Greymouth, Watson and party in 1866, washed up after nine months’ work and obtained one hundredweight of gold. The locality would probably be what was known as “the Stoney Lead.” The yield created a great sensation and is duly recorded and vouched for by the parties and the smelter.
