<3-, TO INCLUDE 9,500,000. NEW YORK, December 3. The creation of a new metropolitan district of New York, including all the territory and opoulation within a radius of approximately 40 miles of City Hall, as compared with the old 10-mile radius, has been announced by the Merchants’ Association of New York. The methods used to re-deflne the district have been approved by the United States Census Bureau as they were laid down at a. conference of commercial, trade and other organisations held recently in Washings ton at the call of the Chamber of Commerce,of the United States, according to the announcement. The new metropolitan district of
New York covers an area of 3765.5 square miles. It has been redefined on the basis of the economic and social activties centring in New York City, such as commuting, delivery service, telephone service and the relative density of population. The old metropolitan district of New York embraced 1368 square miles, and had a population estimated at 8,034,349, including 2,414,301 in territory
adjacent to the limits of New York City. City plan organisations at various times have proposed increasing the metropolitan district and a radius of as much as 60 miles from City Hall has been advocated. On the basis of the new metropolitan area the United States Census Bureau will furnish the 1927 census of manufacturing figures and likewise use the district for the purpose of the 1930 census of population.
