REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, January 17. Mi* Tomlinson, of Auckland, son-in-law of the late Dr Thos. B. Whitton, of Reefton, passed through Reefton en route to the Franz Josef Glacier yesterday. Mr and Mrs A. E. Werry left for Christchurch by this morning’s overland train. Bush fires in the vicinity of Reefton still furnish cause for anxiety. Yesterday the Perfection Valley Mine surface plant was in danger of destruction, but a party left town per car, and after a couple of hours’ stretnuous work rendered the place safe. Mi- Thome, of Sydney, who has been visiting his brother, Mr A. Thorne, of Reef ton Hospital, left for Wellington, where he leaves by the Manuka for Sydney. A party of N.C.O.’s from Westport, under charge of Captain N. Lawn, left for Burnham Camp this morning. They will Jbe in camp for a week for the annual class for the officers and N.C.O.’s of the night parading cadets. Miss Kathleen Scott, who has b?nn on a short visit to Reefton, left by this morning’s train for Christchurch. Ah S. Duffy, of Westport, was a visitor to Reefton for the week-end. While being exercised on the racecourse on Sunday, Mr E. W. Spencer’s thoroufghbred mare Alotion fell ami broke a fetlock and had to be destrcved. The rider, Robert Park, suffered no worse injury than a severe shaking. The animal had not been a success on the race track. Air V. Alborn left for the East Coast by this morning’s overland train. Mrs Farquahar Stewart, of Petone, accompanied by her daughter, Aliss Rene Stewart, is on a visit to Reefton, being the guest of Airs AV. Hughes, Walsh Street. Alesdames H. Cook and O. Griffiths, of Soldiers’ Road, returned on Saturday night from a visit to the North Island. Airs Reid, of Christchurch, is visiting her parents, Mr and Airs Jas. Scarlett, of Church Street. Air G. E. Hubbard returned from Christchurch on Saturday. He reports that Airs Hubbard is improving after her recent operation.. i Aliss Vera Campbell, of Kumara, who has been staying with Airs T. Seawright, returned home on Alonday morning. Air D. Wood, of Victory Street, returned from Christchurch on Saturday evening. Mrs J. W. Dick, of Wellington, arrives from Christchurch to-night on a short visit to her brother, Air N. Lawn. Air Jno. Lawn, who has been for some time employed with Alessrs Lambert and Lawry, has secured a position at Nelson, and left for his new post on Saturday morning. Aliss E. Cairns, who spent her holidays in the North Island, returned by Saturday’s overland train. Air All Saunders, of Blacks Point, has been appointed to a position in the New Zealand Railways, and is now a. member of the learners’ gallery at Wellington for a short period of trainl ing. Owing to the prevailing dry weather the new Keep-It-Dark Company are unable to vrush, and the town water supply is cut off fi'om 9 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly. The reservoir is down 3ft to 4ft below normal, and is now just holding its own against present consumption.
