The stoiy of “Martha” tells of a maid-of-honour, Harriet, who, seeking adventure, consults her friend Nancy. They decide, to go to a neighbouring Fair dressed as servants and enjoy the fun.. At the Fair in Act 2 they meet Lionel and Plunket, two farmers, and jokingly permit themselves to be hired asi waiting maids, calling themselves Martha and Julia respectively. The Kitchen Scene takes place in Act 3, where we find them at Plunket’s farmhouse. There are. amusing incidents when the two girls are expected to perform household duties. Harriet sings to Lionel. Subsequently they escape and return to their homes.
