BOXING

HEENEY V. SHARKEY. (Atieti-alian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, January 11. When Heeney and Sharkey square off in the ring on Friday night, the American will be under a handicap in the view of observers, by reason of a left hand injury, suffered in November last, and possibly weakening, due to heavy body punishment received during the fight with Dempsey. Sharkey claims that his hand is in good condition, but to-morrow the Boxing Commission physicians will examine the fighter, paying particular attention to his hand, which at the time of the injury had to be placed in a plaster cast. The American, nevertheless, reigns favouirte. Sharkey is said to weight 1931b5., while Heeney’s weight is approximately the same. The American is considered the faster and better boxer, but ability to take punishment, and an earnest desire to earn the right to meet Tunney, will make Heeney a dangerous contender. It is understood that the New Zealander informed Rickard that if he beats Sharkey, he must be matched against the champion, although Jack Delaney has declared he will challenge Heeney. Sharkey has been actively training in Boston, while Heeney is working out at a local gymnasium. SHARKEY’S HAND FIT. NEW YORK, January 12. Sharkey is pronounced in perfect physical condition, and the doubt concerning his left hand has been removed by the doctors, the wound having completely healed. Record gate receipts are expected. The odds on Sharkey to win and meet Tunney, have reached two to one, with few takers.
