REEFTON NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, January 13. The body of the late Sydney Durward was recovered from the Wealth Nations shaft from below No. 4 Level by a party of volunteers from Black’s Point, Crushington, and Reefton headed by Messrs F. W. Spencer, managing Director, W. Gore Porter, Secretary, R. Mclntosh, Blackwater Mines staff, and D. McKane, secretary Ihangahua Miners’ Union. A grapnel was used with success and after some casts had been made, the remains were hoisted to No. 4 level chamber and conveyed to the mouth of the tunnel at Orusfiington and immediately placed in the coffin and conveyed to his late residence. An examination of the body disclosed fearful injuries, the body being badly mutilated. An inquest was held this morning before Mi’ W. B. Auld, Acting Coroner.
On Wednesday evening, members of the Reefto'ri School Committee visited Ikamatua Where they met representatives of the Mawheralti, Blackwater, and Ikamatua School Committees, when the matter of the Dental Clinic proposed to be established at Reefton Was discussed from all points and fully explained. The delegates present all expressed themselves favourably towards its establishment at Reefton, and promised substantial financial assistance from their several school districts.
The water in the Reefton reservoir is some five feet below its normal level and the maintenance of an adequate supply is exercising the minds of the Countv authorities. The water has been turned off every evening at 7 p.m. for the last two evenings and the continued dry weather so far shows little sighs of breaking. Private advice has been received that Mrs Hubbard who underwent an operation at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, on Tuesday last, is doingwell. . , The exodus of young people who have beeri spending their holidays with their parents was marked on Thursday when Messrs Cyril McCawe left for Christchurch, W. Mitchell for Wellington, Miss Kate Hooker accompanied by Miss Great Magee for Christchurch. „ Mr and Mrs E. Dyson ot J auranga, who have been spending the holidays with Mrs Patterson senr., Walsh Street, left for home this morning. Mrs G. Taylor and her son, Mr H. Taylor, left for Auckland on Thu \®- day, both much improved m health after their stay on the Coast.
