LATE MESSAGES

LONDON, January 11. Although not consulted by either the Eastern Co. or Marconis, with reference to the proposed arrangement, the Pacific Cable Board welcomes cooperation as a means of averting cut rates, and is hopeful that the Eastern and Marconis will present a joint recommendation thereupon at the Wireless Conference on January 16. The Pacific, with three Governments’ unlimited resources, considers it would be best able to meet the cut throat competition, which nevertheless it wholeheartedly deprecates. The Pacific’s Christmas week traffic was the greatest in the history of the cable.

CALCUTTA, January 11. Tea Sales: Useful selection offered. All good quality broken teas met with good competition. Leaf teas were firm to dearer. Mediums were easier, declining three to six pice. Dusts were very strong. Average prices: Common Pekoe Souchong, twelve annas to twelve annas six pice; clean twelve to 12/3; Black Leaf Pekoe 14/6 to 14/9. LONDON,- January 11. The police search for Captain Cant (of the Maui Pomare) continues unavailingly. Scotland Yard circulated descriptions, and passenger lists of steamers since November 29 have been inspected. It is assumed that he is still in Britain. His disappearance followed the receipt of a message from New Zealand, to which Cant did not reply. A further message, a month later, invited him to reply to the first cable, to which the recipients in Dublin replied that Cant has gone to Liverpool a month earlier.
