PERSONAL NOTES

Mr and Mrs E. Smart arrived yesf terday from Christchurch on a visit to the West Coast.

Miss J. Kennedy arrived from Hastings yesterday, on a visit to her mother, Mrs J. Kennedy, Chapel Street.

Mr F. Craig, Railway Commercial Agent, arrived yesterday, and left this morning for the Franz Josef Glacier.

The English Futurists Company arrived from Melbourne yesterday, and are staying at the Hotel Dominion.

Dr. Bird, who is in temporary charge of the Grey River Hospital, has resigned from the resident medical staff of the Christchurch Hospital.

Mr Thomas Brown "who has been representing St. John's Church at'the Presbyterian General 1 , Assembly, returned yesterday to Greymouth.

Mr J. Smeaton of Dobson entered the Grey Hospital yesterday, and will undergo an operation for appendicitis to-morrow.

The death is announced from Brisbane of Mr. J. J. Knight, managing director, and formerly editor of the Brisbane Courier.

Miss Vera Groom, vfho was operated on in Christchurch a few weeks ago is making good progress and hopes to return to Greymouth in a few days.

Mr W. D. Olney arrived from Victoria yesterday to take over the ’ management of the Greymouth branch of the Commercial Bank. He is accompanied by Mrs Olney.

Matron Dunsford, of Westport, has been invited to act as examiner at the practical and oral examinations in general nursing, which will be held at Greymouth on December 7.

Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., was tendered a complimentary social in St. Kilda Town Hall on Wednesday evening to commemorate the adoption of the Summer Time Act, and was presented with a tea and coffee set.

Mr Amery and party left North Egmont Mountain House at 4.30 this morning and by 7.30 had reached about 7000 ft, when the guides advised turning back on account of the treacherous nature of the snow and the high wind. Had time permitted, the summit could have been reached and good views obtained and the climb enjoyed. The party returned to town and left by train for Wanganui.—Press Assn.

The wedding took place at St. John’s Church, Westport, on Wednesday evening, of Miss Madge Bentley, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Bentley, Westport, to Mr Elga King, eldest son of Mr and Mrs King, Johnsonville, Wellington. The bride, who was given away by her father; looked charming in a frock of ivory georgette over satin, trimmed with silver lace. A tulle veil was worn with a wreath of orange blossom. She carried a bouquet of white j;oses and maidenhair fern. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Nora Bentley, who wore a pretty frock of rose crepe-de-chine, with trimmings of velvet ribbop, hat and shoe to match. She carried a posy of roses to tone with her frock. The bridegroom was attended by. his brother, Mr J. King.

The death of Mrs Whitmore, wife of Captain F. N. Whitmore of Rotomanu, occurred at the: Christchurch Hospital yesterday morning. Deceased had been ailing for the past year and had at intervals been an inmate of the Grey Hospital. Unfavourable indications manifesting themselves recently, Mrs Whitmore, on the advice of Dr. Moore of the Grey Hospital, went to Christchurch, and entered the Christchurch Hospital. Mrs Whitmore was in charge of the secondary department of the Grey Main school during the war period, relieving the late Mr A. Talbot who went on War service. She remained at her post till the return of Captain Whitmore from the front, and was highly esteemed on account of her academic capacity as well as for her personality and influence over her scholars. She is survived by her husband, and son Frank, who is farming with his father at Rotomanu.
