BULLER v, MARLBOROUGH. (Per Press Association.) WESTPORT, September 11. In glorious weather, before a very good attendance of the public yesterday afternoon, Buller stalled off the second challenge I his season for the Emms Shield by defeating Marlborough by one goal to nil. At the last minute Steele and Scott were unable to take their places in the field for Buller, and T. Blythe and Ormond filled the vacancies. Buller’s-goal was scored in the first spell by Newman, after a scramble in goal. Marlborough earlier very nearly goaled. In the second spell Buller .were battering at Marlborough’s goal, but could not get past the custodian, Shipp, who played a wonderful game. The visitors created a thrill on one occasion by taking the ball, to. within inches of Buller’s goal, a scramble taking place, from which Smith eventually cleared.' The outstanding players were Shipp, A. Meek ami I‘oidiyin (Marlborough), and Newman, I. Blythe, Ritchie, and Graham (Buller). At the conclusion of the match Shipp was carried shoulder-high off the field. CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND. CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. In the Association lootball match for the English Association’s trophy to-day, Canterbury drew with Auckland one goal each. Canterbury played with the sun and wind behind them in the first spell, but even with these advantages they were heavily attacked for most of the spell. McDougall, in goal for Canterbury, was very busy and very safe. He was hurt quite early in the spell, but stayed on. Auckland scored first. A forward rush put Carter in possession, and he transferred to Humphreys, who crossed to Chalmers, an(l Chalmers headed in a beautiful shot. At half time Auckland led by 1 to 0. From the kick-off, Canterbury set up a hot attack, which resulted in Trotter heading one in,after a struggle in the goal month. The play in the second spell was very even.
