(Special to "Star.")
CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. *l. An Association football tourney between representatives of the Primary schoolboys on the West Coast and Canterbury was held to-day at North Hagley Park. The ground, despite the heavy rain, was in fairly good order, though a few pools of water were in front of the goal posts. Games were played between Canterbury A. and West Coast A teams, and Canterbury B and West Coast B teams, the home players, who were much heavier, winning each match. In A’s match Coast kicked off. Consedine’s kick at goal was successful, the- greasy ball slipping through Kittelty’s hands. — Canterbury 1, Coast 0. Canterbury kept up the pressure, and for a few minutes Coasters had an axious time defending their goal. Fleet had an unsuccessful shot at goal. Good play by Jones brought the visitors down to the other end of the field, where they were awarded a penalty. Jones’s shot at goal, though a good one, was turned by Bissett. The Coast continued to attack, and what appeared as a likely score was prevented by Bissett’s leaving his goal, and speculating. Halftime sounded shortly afterwards, with the score still Canterbury 1, West Coast 0.
After the resumption of play, Canterbury attacked, but Coast cleared and brought the ball to the Canterbury end, where they were awarded a free kick. Morrison shot at goal. Quill, in trying to clear, headed into the net. —Canterbury 1, West Coast 1. Canterbury came again for a few minutes, and pressed in front of the Coast goal, but the visitors were able to clear. Coast now took up the offensive. and Roberts appeared to have a likely chance to score, but he was too eager, and shot wildly, the ball gong outside. Canterbury returned to the attack, and from wide out Wardell had a shot at goal, which gave Kittelty no chance.—Canterbury 2, West Coast 1. The final whistle blew a minute later. Referee: H. J. Church.
In the seconds’ game, for a long while after the game started, play was fairly even, with Coast having slightly the better of things. Then the Canterbury forwards broke away, and Mollinson goaled from a short way out with a hot shot.—Canterbury 1, West Coast 0. immediately afterwards, a free kick was awarded Canterbury, the ball being stopped by Coast players just in front of the goal. Petrie rushed up and goaled — Canterbury 2, West Coast 0. Play until half-time was even, neither side being able to score. For the first quarter of an hour in the second half, play was fairly even. Then Patterson had an oblique shot at goal, the ball striking the post and rebounding in. Canterbury 3, West Coast 0.
