SWIMMING.

VANCOUVER, August 31. At Toronto, more than two hundred swimmers started in the twenty-one miles Canadian National Exhibition Marathon, to-day for purses totalling fifty thousand dollars. George Young quit after the start, when Vierkotter was leading. LATER.

The cold waters of Lake Ontario defeated many of the world’s best swimmers, in the twenty-one miles swim for prizes, to which William Wrigley Junior, and the Canadian National Exhibition each contributed twenty-five thousand dollars. Only fifty competitors remained in the water at the end of six hours, out of 250 starters. Many favourites retired early. Among the early quitters were Ed. Keating, Harold Waters (New Zealand), Byron Summers, John O’Halloran, and George Clayton, but Ernest Vierkotter led by three-quarters of a mile after fourteen miles were covered. George Michel was in sixth place. VANCOUVER, August 31. Vierkotter won the swimming marathon. BASKETBALL. WELLINGTON, August 31. The results of the third day’s pinyin the N.Z. Basketball Tournament were:—Otago 38 v. Hawke’s Bay 14, Wellington 52 v. Canterbury 10, Ashburton 52 v. Hawke’s Bay 12, Auckland 32 v. Wellington 29, Canterbury 3 v. Southland 29. The Basketball Conference was continued to-night. It was decided that rings on goal posts should be of uniform circumference of 16 inches, and that two straigth lines, 18 inches apart, are to be used in the centre base, instead of the circle used now, and that the referee is to throw up at the same side always. Teams at the New Zealand tourney are not to be asked to play more than two matches a day, and the tourney is not to last more than five days. The 1928 tourney will be held at Auckland. Officers w-ere elected: —Patroness: Mrs. J. G. Coates; President, Mrs. R. S. Mclnnes (Southland); hon. auditor: W. W. Waddilove (Wellington); vice president: Mrs. H. D. Muir (Canterbury); standing committee: Mrs. R. S. Mclnnes, Mrs. H. D. Muir and two members of the Auckland Association; secertary and treasurer: Miss M. L. Stathern. BOWLING. The annual meeting of the Hokitika Bowling Club was held on Tuesday evening. The Vice-President (Mr J. B. Ward) occupied the chair and there were 14 members present. The following new members were nominated and elected: Messrs Garnet, Perry, G. Coles, L. Gooch, Alan Stevenson, T. H. Coltman, Robt. Stuart and J. Conning.

The annual report referred to the deaths of Messrs G. H. Blank and H. A. Thompson. The balance sheet showed receipts for the year, including £l7/6/, the net proceeds of the ball, totalled £lO9/1/. The expenditure amounted to £96/16/6, thus enabling the overdraft to be reduced from to £6l/4/10. ' The Singles’ Championship for the year was won by Mr D. Stevenson, this making the seventh occasion on which he, has been the holder. A number of ladies took part in play during the earlier part of 'the season, but interest dwindled among them as the season advanced and the innovation was not as successful as was hoped for. At the end of the season the green was top-dressed and it promises to be in good order for the coming season. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season: President, Mr J. B. Ward;. Vice-President: Mi’ James King; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr A. E. Benjamin; Auditor, Mr J. H. Wilson; General Committee: Messrs Stevenson, Braddon, Bruce, Lakin, Breeze, J. Wilson, Knowles-Smith, Cooke and C. J. King; Centre Delegate: Mr A. E. Benjamin; Selection Committee: Messrs Hayward, Howard and Stevenson; Ground Committee: Messrs Stevenson, Braddon and Knowles-Smith.

The subscription was fixed the same as previous years, at £2/12/6 with a reduction of 10/6 if paid before November 30.

On the motion of Messrs Benjamin and Knowles-Smith, it was resolved that lady supporters have the free use of the green for play, in appreciation of their support so freely given. It was resolved that the opening day be fixed for Saturday, October 8.
