PRESS CONFERENCE {Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, August 29. The Geneva correspondent of “The Times,” says that the Press Conference has terminated. It adopted a programme directed towards securing the freedom of news at. its source, increased facilities for journalists'and efficiency df the press. The programme was forwarded to the League Secretariat to enable its conveyance with instructions to various technical organisations to secure collaboration. U.S.A. CRUISER NEW YORK, August 29. The cruiser “Seattle” is to be retired from active service, and she will henceforth be employed as a receiving ship in the Brooklyn Navy yard. PRESSMAN DEPORTED LONDON, August 29. The Central News Agency’s Paris correspondent reports that Tass Agency’s representative has been ordered from France for false reports to Moscow, regarding the Sacco-Van-zetti rioting.
GEOPHYSIC CONFERENCE LONDON, August 30. Mr. Andrew Thompson, director of the Apia Observatory, is representing New Zealand at the International Con - ference of Geophysics at The Hague, commencing on September 3. The objects of the conference include that of arriving at an understanding as to the international use of scientific instruments for recording‘earthquakes. Mr. Thompson, who carries out experiments relating to wind light and velocity, at Samoa, which are likely to be useful to trans-Pacific flying, is hopeful for valuable results from this conference, particularly in the matter of comparison with European observations. INDIAN RIOTS. CALCUTTA, August 30. During a riot at Cawnpore, one was killed and a hundred injured. Armed cars are patrolling. The dispute arose over the most trivial question of the payment of a Hindu by a Moslem shopkeeper. EMPIRE FISHERIES LONDON, August 30. The Imperial Economic Committee’s' report on British fisheries suggests that factory ships accompany fishing fleets to treat fish immediately it is caught. It suggests that such ships might be used on the valuable fishing grounds off Australia and New Zealand, hitherto only partially worked.
