DIESEL ENGINE

A REMARKABLE REPORT. A remarkable development in the Diesel engine for ships is foreshadowed In the news that leaked out in Belfast (reports the Manchester Guardian). This was to the effect that preliminary steps have been taken in Harland and Wolff’s engine works here to build an engine of close on'loo, ooo horse power. As an engine of this size would require a vessel of over 50,000 tons, it is inferred in well-in-formed quarters that the new engine is designed for the mammoth new White Star liner which is to be built at Queen’s Island yard, so that both vessel and engine will mark a record. At present the most powerful Diesel

engine has only about 2,500 horsepower.
