HOSPITAL PURCHASES
A BULLER COMPLAINT. Support local industry is apparently one of the Buller Hospital Board’s mottos. However, the fact that some linoleum had been bought in Hokitika and some apples from a travelling vendor brought forth a good deal of protest at the Board’s meeting on Tuesday evening. Before the accounts were passed for payment, Mr J. H. Powell said that he" had noticed that some linoleum had been bought from Hokitika and some apples from a man trading in the County.- He considered that wJiere possible, goods should be bought in Westport. Mr G. M. Powell, the secretary, said that the linoleum could not be bought as cheap-in Westport as it had been in Hokitika.
Mr M. McLean said that he supported Mr J. Powell and he was of opinion that the linoleum could not be purchased cheaper in Hokitika. He considered that before anything was bought a requisition should go through the secretary. Mr J. Powell thought that .even if the apples were a little cheaper, he was of opinion that it was improper to buy outside of Westport where the ratepayers -were situated. Mrs Patterson said that she had seen the linoleum and she considered that it was not of good quality. Mr E. R. Fox considered that whereev.er possible things should be purchased locally. The Chairman, Hon. W. H. Mclntyre said that it did not seem necessary to send to Hokitika for things. The secretary said that wherever possible commodities were bought locally. The discussion was then dropped.
