AUSTRALIAN DESERT

SURVEY FROM* AEROPLANE. Central Australia consists only of desert, according to a statement made by Mr W. Oliver, one of a party )f four who returned by aeroplane from the interior to Broken Hill a fortnight ago. Mr Oliver, together with Mr W. D. - Oliver, General F. S. Hughes and Mr A. Macey, left Melbourne on June 28. Mr William Oliver said he would not touch with a pitchfork any proposal connected with the interior. They visited the country around Farina, Maree, Oodnadatta, Charlotte Waters and Alice Springs. “Any man settling in that country,” he said, “deserves the sympathy and support of the Government and should be exempt from taxation and treated as leniently as possible. Only men of great courage and tenacity settle there.” Mr Oliver said he saw nothing to justify the construction of a railway. The money would be better spent in providing water along the stock routes, in helping settlers and in other work. The party travelled about 1700 miles and ran into a severe dust storm on the outward trip. After leaving Marree the aeroplane rose many thousand feet, but the dust was so dense that they were unable to see where they were going, so they returned to Marree and waited a day.
