HOCKEY

TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 22. A civic farewell was extended to the New Zealand hockey team which left for Australia by the Maheno to-day. The team will be away about six weeks with eleven matches to play. The chief object is the Manning Memorial Cup, which will be played for in the fourth test match at Brisbane. COAST TEAM’S CHAPERON. (To the Editor.) Sir.—May we avail ourselves of your courtesy to ask if the selection of the chaperon for the hockey team to visit Nelson, was done by the legitimate method. In consideration of the fact that the rep. team consists mostly of Mawhera players, it would appear that some consideration could have been shown to some of the ladies with the necessary qualifications, who are members of other teams. Enthusiasm is one of the main essentials of a chaperon, and this has scarcely been in evidence during the present season at any rate, so far as the lady selected is concerned. If any plums are to be distributed in the way of a trip such as the one to be undertaken, it is only fair that those of us who have wholeheartedly worked for the good of the game, very often at great inconvenience, should receive a fair deal, by being given an opportunity to refuse selection. Thanking you in anticipation for the publishing of this protest, we remain, yours, etc.,

“DISSATISFIED.”
