SHIP-CAPTAIN’S ILLNESS

TREATMENT WIRELESSED. (Per Frees Association.) AUCKLAND, July 20. The values of. wireless on ships in cases of emergency was exemplified during the voyage of the Union Company’s steamer Waipahi, which returned to Auckland this morning. When the vessel was en route from Auckland to Raratonga, the Master, Captain G. A. Grey, became ill, and with still a considerable distance to travel, his condition was such that he required immediate medical attention. The Waipahi does not carry a doctor, and a wireless message, describing the captain’s illness, was despatched to H.M.S. Veronica. Acting on instructions received by wireless from the doctor of the warship, Mr F. Pearson, chief steward of the Waihapi, assisted by Mr J. D. Lundie, chief officer, carried out an operation, and, as a result, the suffering of the patient was considerably relieved. The Veronica reached Raratonga two hours before the Waipahi, and when the steamer arrived, all arrangements had been made for the admission of Capt, Grey to the hospital. He is still in the hospital, but is making good progress toward recovery. Mr Lundie took command of the vessel;, the other officers being promoted accordingly.
