McKenzie, who controlled the recent Ranfurly Shield match, stated to-night that he was tendering his resignation as Secretary of the Wairarapa Referees’ Association. Mr McKenzie also holds the position of the Appointment Board and intends to release: himself of this responsibility. He declined to make a statement until to-morrow night, when a special meeting of the Referees’ Association is calltad to appoint a new Secretary and Appointment Board. > It is believed that Mr McKenzie is withdrawing only from his Executive positions, but will continue refereeing, as he is drawn to control a competition game next Saturday. “THE BIGGEST WAR." (Special to "Star.") AUCKLAND, July 19. Auckland referees have fired the first actual shot in what is bound to
be the biggest Rugby war ever waged in New Zealand, over the whitewashing of Maurice Brownlie and Quentin Donald, ordered off in the Ranfurly Shield match at Masterton. It was pointed out in discussion on a motion that the referee, H. J. McKenzie, who had been twice mutually agreed upon for the last two Bay Wairarapa Shield challenges, suffered ignominy for fearlessly carrying out his duty, and it was further stressed that a referee at all times is the sole judge of fact, his decision therefore being final. Thus the two Unions greatly exceeded then - powers in open-* ly condemning him. As the New Zealand Union has more than once increased sentences inflicted by affiliated Unions in Club orderings off, it is surely much more necessary to review evidence in cases where international players “dispatched” in matches, directly under the New Zealand body’s jurisdiction, such as the Ranfurly Shield games, especially where such players are whitewashed in the face of a clear report from a referee and of general, (though not unanimous) support of facts by independent testimony. A special meeting of the United Football Club (Fourth Grade) will be held in the pavilion this evening at 7 o’clock. A full attendance of members is requested.
