TOWN BOARD DISPUTE
CHAIRMAN ASKED TO RESIGN. WHANGAREI, July 7. Before opening business at the regular meeting of the Hikurangi Town Board on Tuesday evening the standing orders were suspended to consider a petition signed by five members calling on the chairman, Mr R. C. Cherrie, to vacate the chair. The petition stated: “We, the undersigned, hereby respectfully ask you to vacate the chair. This is not a personal matter in any way, but we consider it in the best interests of the electors, and that it will facilitate the functions of the Board, also be conducive to a better feeling during meetings and expedite the business.” Mr Cherrie refused to vacate the chair, whereupon it was moved that the Board resign in a body and go before the electors for the election of a new Board. Five voted in favour of the motion, and one member refrained from voting, the chairman being the only one to oppose the motion. It was further resolved to convene a meeting of the electors to explain the position, the voting being the same as on the previous motion.
